Hello! My name is Phil Mento, and I am the Head Instructor at Achieve Jiu Jitsu Academy. I want to say Thank You for visiting our website, and I hope you find exactly what you're looking for. I'd like to share with you how I got started with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the impact it has had on my life.
I started my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training in 2010 at 18 years old. I was first introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from watching UFC. Witnessing the effectiveness of Jiu Jitsu in a fight, I believed that this would be the most beneficial martial art to invest my time into. I had dealt with bullying at a younger age, and experienced some situations where I was not as confident in being able to protect myself as I would of liked to have been.
In most physical altercations, people end up throwing a punch or two and then grabbing a hold of each other and falling OR being tackled to the ground. Jiu Jitsu was designed exactly for that: How to defend yourself if you end up in a grappling situation standing up or on the ground. What fascinated me about this martial art was the ability to defend myself against a bigger/stronger opponent using leverage and proper technique. After my first Jiu Jitsu class, I realized how little I actually knew about fighting and self defense.
Within a year I started competing and fell in love with it. This martial art has helped me get into the best shape of my life and given me the skillset to be able to protect myself. I have also made some great, life long relationships with the people I have trained Jiu Jitsu with. Training hard alongside a team of people is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling things I have ever got to experience.
I am looking forward to a lifetime of training and teaching this amazing martial art. Thank you for your time and I'll see you on the mats!
